How to change screen resolution in ubuntu?

I have a laptop with a broken screen hooked up to my desktop monitor. How do I change it from widescreen1280x800 to 1024x768(I think thats what it is).How to change screen resolution in ubuntu?
As long as your drivers are ok (it sounds like they are, as you already have the 1280x800 option), this is a simple setting you can change. A standard square screen you're talking about *is* probably 1024x768.

Go to System %26gt; Preferences %26gt; Display in the bar at the top of your screen. A dialog should pop up, and you'll see a drop-down list showing your current resolution. Click on it and try out the different resolutions. When you find the one you want, click apply, and enjoy the proper resolution!
